M is for ‘Maxims’ in teamwork.
Maxims of conversation defined by linguistic Paul Grice are a set of observations that describe how people communicate when they want to be properly understood by others.
You can use these maxims as guiding principles to make your #team communication as effective as possible.
There are four main maxims, which revolve around the quantity, quality, and relevance of what people say, as well as on the manner in which they say it.
– Maxims of Quantity (be informative)
– Maxims of Quality (be truthful)
– Maxim of Relation (be relevant)
– Maxims of Manner (be clear)
However, in reality, people often violate many of these maxims without realizing that they’re doing so, which spoils, blocks and hinders their communication.
Therefore, in order to ensure that your communication is as effective and free of issues as possible, your teams can actively use these maxims as guiding principles.
Actively remind yourself to abide by these maxims when your teams is trying to convey information to each other.
And this is where #belbin team roles add deeper understanding.
