S is for STAR Teams
You can assemble a team of your star players, but this does not mean the team is any more likely to succeed than a team comprised of average players.
Some key factors that every manager needs to consider if they want to build a STAR team ready to tackle the biggest challenges are Psychological safety, Dependability, Structure and clarity of goals and roles, Personal meaning of the work to each team member, Impact of work (belief that the work the team is doing – matters).
Few great questions for STAR teams could be:
1. How will this project make a difference to the organization?
2. How will each team member benefit if this project succeed?
3. What do we and can expect from each other?
4. How do we ensure that we have open, honest and balanced communication between team members?
5. What are the roles and responsibilities amongst the team members?
6. What are success indicators, milestones and plan for achievement?
STAR teams start with “Why” as the critical first step. The “Why” is the most critical stage because it creates the context for all that follows.
The second critical step “How” is all about the culture of the team (or group norms), building trust and respectful relationships between the team members for open, honest and balanced communication.
The third and final step, the “What”, is creating the plan and structure for the group including clarity on the objectives, roles and responsibilities within the group, ensuring team members work to their strengths and to a shared plan agreed on by all.
Follow that structured approach, ask those important questions to ensure you turn your bunch of performers into a ‘STAR TEAM’ !!
