Confused ? Where to begin ??

Writing your first book has never been easy

Almost on the last stages of finishing my first … am keen to share my learning which I acquired speaking to several authors.

Some had sleepless nights while others had a template and many had a blue print which they followed.

Yet their dilemmas were almost common.

Here are 7 dilemmas most authors often face before writing a book:

  1. Clarity of Purpose
    Dilemma:
Should the book serve as a personal expression, solve a problem, or establish expertise?
    Resolution:
Define your “why” – knowing your purpose will guide your content and tone
  2. Choosing the Audience
    Dilemma:
Should you write for a niche audience or aim for broader appeal?
Resolution: Identify your ideal reader. Writing with a specific audience in mind creates stronger connections
  3. Genre and Structure
    Dilemma:
Fiction or non-fiction? A memoir, a guidebook, or something experimental?
Resolution: Reflect on your natural strengths and interests. Sketch a structure that aligns with your vision
  4. Originality vs. Trends
    Dilemma:
Should you follow popular themes or stick to a unique, untested idea?
Resolution: Balance is key. Use trends for relevance, but ensure your voice and perspective are authentic
  5. Time Commitment
    Dilemma:
How will you find time to write consistently while managing other responsibilities?
Resolution: Set realistic goals. Commit to a routine – be it daily, weekly, or focused sprints
  6. Self-Doubt
    Dilemma:
“Am I good enough to write this?” or “What if no one likes it?”
Resolution: Embrace imperfection and view writing as a journey of growth. Write for yourself first, then refine for readers
  7. Publishing Path
    Dilemma:
    Traditional publishing or self-publishing?
Resolution: Consider your goals, resources, and timeline. Research both options and align them with your vision

Each of these dilemmas offers an opportunity for reflection and planning, setting the foundation for a fulfilling writing journey

I would say – ‘ Just take the first step …. rest will follow …
